Food Safety At Your Super Bowl Party

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is out with its tips for food safety during your Super Bowl party and number one is never leave food out for more than two hours.

"Two hours is the length of time that it can safely be out without any kind of rapid bacterial growth to dangerous levels."

Food safety specialisty Meredith Carothers with the U.S.D.A. says there are exceptions.

"The only foods that you can put out for that entire time without any kind of hot or cold source are gonna be things like chips or crackers...more of those shelf-stable items that are kind of good munchies throughout the entire game."

Carothers suggests putting out smaller platters so you're not putting too much food out at one time, allowing food to spoil easier.

That goes for those Buffalo wings, of which nearly one and a half billion will be consumed on Sunday.

"So you can get two hours out of chicken wings, but just right after that you want to put them in the refrigerator for leftovers."

If you want to avoid getting sick while enjoying your Super Bowl party, wash your hands thoroughly and frequently.

Carothers says in most cases bacterial infections are not transferred through food.

"They need a host and it would only be transferable really if your Aunt Betty sneezes on a chicken wing and then you eat it immediately, type of thing."

Another way to avoid people getting sick is to be sure your guests aren't double-dipping in that queso.
