Rays Drop Pitching Duel In Extra Innings To Rockies

ST. PETERSBURG (WDAE) -- Tropicana Field saw an old fashioned pitcher duel Wednesday afternoon, as both the Tampa Bay Rays and Colorado Rockies pitchers held hitters scoreless until the eleventh inning, when Chris Ianetta's solo shot off Chaz Roe powered Colorado to a 1-0 win, snapping the Rays five-game winning streak.

Both Rays starter Charlie Morton and Rockies pitcher German Marquez were on their game Wednesday. Morton allowed just four hits, walked a pair and struck out six in his six innings of work, while Marquez allowed three hits and walked three, striking out seven in seven scoreless frames.

Tampa Bay had multiple opportunities to get on the scoreboard in regulation, they loaded the bases with one out, but Marquez got Brandon Lowe to hit into an inning ending double play. In the seventh, the Rays got runners to second and third with one out, but Mike Zunino struck out and Willy Adames tried to bunt in the runner, but Nolan Arenado made a spectacular play to get the shortstop at first base and keep the game scoreless.

Tampa Bay wasted a chance with runner on the corners and two out in the eighth against Scott Oberg when Avisail Garcia grounded out, and had the same opportunity against Oberg with one out in the ninth, prompting Bud Black to use a five-man infield with centerfielder Ian Desmond playing second base. Willy Adames tried to get a bunt down, but failed and struck out, and after intentionally walking Austin Meadows, Tommy Pham grounded out to first base to leave the bases loaded.

Tampa Bay also left two runners on in the tenth when Kevin Kiermaier struck out to end the inning.

After putting up a scoreless top of the tenth inning, Chaz Roe struck out Garrett Hampson before Ianetta, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the eighth took an 0-2 slider than hung in the strike zone and sent it into the seats in left for his first home run of the year.

After getting the final out of the tenth, Wade Davis (1-0) worked a 1-2-3 11th inning to finish off the game and prevent the sweep.

Tampa Bay will have Thursday off before beginning a nine-game road trip on the west coast Friday.
