Bucs Bowles Running Defense With Rookies That Don't Make Same Mistake Twice

A lot was made of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers using three picks in this year's draft on defensive backs, especially after selecting three defensive backs in the previous year's draft. In total the team has had seven picks in the second & third round in the past two drafts & have used five of those picks on defensive backs. The only other position players drafted in the last two drafts in the second & third round were running back Ronald Jones II & guard Alex Cappa.

One of last year's draft picks, cornerback Carlton Davis will more than likely start the season as the team's number one cornerback & because of his development so far in the NFL, it's hard to argue that the team hasn't gotten value from that pick. But just four days into training camp, the players selected this year are still what defensive coordinator Todd Bowles calls "puppies" when it comes to NFL experience. As you can see in the video below, Bowles did get a chuckle when he was asked on Tuesday about a celebration the defensive backs did when one of the rookies safety Mike Edwards picked off a pass by quarterback Blaine Gabbert & ran it all the way back for a pick-6.

Bowles also stated on Tuesday that the rookie defensive backs are making progress through the early stages of training camp. But whether it's OTAs or now, in the video below, Bowles expressed that there is one quality that he really likes that rookie defensive backs have & that's not making the same mistake twice.
